Pieter Burger is a South African patent and trade mark attorney. He has more than 40 years’ experience as a patent attorney. Pieter’s legal career started in 1978 with Spoor & Fisher, one of the most respected specialist intellectual property law firms in the country, a firm well known worldwide. Most of his 12 years at Spoor & Fisher were as a partner in Johannesburg, where he developed a substantial commercial practice. In 1991 Pieter started his own firm relocating from Johannesburg to Durban, but was invited to join Shepstone & Wylie, a large Durban commercial law firm in 1992 as a partner tasked with creating an intellectual property law capacity within the firm. This endeavour enjoyed some success, but Pieter nevertheless decided to re-establish his present firm PFT Burger Attorneys, which he did in 1994.
Pieter Burger has a background in architecture and design and has acquired specialist skills in information technology and the law pertaining to this area of technology. He wrote the section of the authoritative South African text on computer contracts Butterworths Forms and Precedents – Vol 5; Intellectual Property Law – Computer Contracts (first edition).
For many years Pieter was part of the Technology Top 100 core adjudication panel and in the past has been a board member and vice president of the Durban Chamber of Commerce and a member of the board of the SA Chamber of Business.
